Gooseberry - transplanting

    Hi

    Please can someone advise can I transplant a gooseberry bush as it is outgrowing it's current space - if so when is the best time to do this - any help as always is so much appreciated smiley - ok

    Now is good time. Give it a real denching first and the try to lift it with as big a root ball as possible. You may find that some of the roots go a long way and you 'll have to cut a few.
    I've just done the same to some of mine as I'd originally planted them too close together and they were getting a bit of mildew in the spring as a result. They like plenty of air movement through and around the plant.

    When we moved into our house there were two gooseberry bushes in an area that was being rearranged. We dug them up and pushed them roughly in a corner for some weeks. Eventually, when the new raised beds were ready (this must have been in late autumn or winter) we replanted the gooseberries to see if they'd survive. They've responded by giving us huge crops every year since.
    If it's half as tough as our bushes, I think there's every chance that yours will transplant successfully.
