As onion roots are normally found quite close to the surface of the soil, are there any 'hindrances' to growing (non-overwintering) seeds overwinter on a propagation table in loo tubes which may restrict their lateral growth and be ready for transplanting in the spring? Bit of a jumble, but I hope you can see my queary? Cheers, Tony.
Haven't tried onions, Tony, but other things I've grown in loo roll tubes get little fungi sprouting out of the sides and tops. This may be to do with my choice of potting compost, but it does happen more in cardboard tubes than in plastic pots or modules. I'm not sure whether it harms the growth of the seedlings - I suspect it does slow them down and if small toadstools are thriving, then the conditions may be right for damping-off which is a fungal disease.
Perhaps this will not happen if the propagating table is at reasonably constant temperature and humidity? What do others think?
On the occations I've tried loo tubes, I too have had fungi and 'hairy things' growing, I think it is because the outside of the tubes are constantly damp. Thanks for your thoughts, I'll give it a go. Our crop of onions ran out farr too soon this year! Cheers, Tony.
I've had good results with growing peas in loo roll tubes and no fungi. I put two tubs in a large yoghurt pot and fill the pot with compost, both inside the tubes and on each side of them. I plant one pea in each tube and one pea in each gap on either side of the tubes. That doesn't sound very clear, sorry. When I tip them out of the yoghurt pot for planting, you get four little plants with their own separate roots.
You mite find that the seed will come up but then fail as the light drop....they will do better if you give them light as well as a little bottom heat....or just wait till after the new year as they will not need so much TLC.
Whatsthemarrow...
Koala girl, that's a brilliant idea! I'll try that next year. I've had the opposite problem with loo roll tubes, in that the exposed cardboard rims encouraged the compost to dry out too much. I had been putting 6 or 8 tubes in an ice cream container, with your way the tops of the tubes can sit snug inside the yogurt pot and not dry out. Thank you!

I shall follow that advice also. Cheers, Tony.
I'm amazed that you understood what I meant!
