    Hiya
Will lettuces and spring cabbages grow in a polytunnel over winter? I have bought some with that intention but am now getting cold feet and think perhaps I should have organised a cold frame. I have read comments on carrots which I will certainly try in PT but I realy would like to get other things growing. Seems such a waste not to grow things through winter if it is possible and up until now my garden has been bare after harvesting in autumn. Also any other hints on what I can put in there?

    This question was left unanswered!

I have no real knowledge of polytunnels but do know that lettuce will grow in a polytunnel over winter, most probably the cabbages too.

Best lettuce for this is the cut and come again type. I do this with simple little tunnels of clear plastic over bent lengths tubes that are used for electric wiring.

lucky salads and cabbages I'd say...mine are out in the open, in full sun and well drained but they have no other protection. If I can grow things outdoors in Aberdeenshire then I think you'll be just fine in a polytunnel.

Some won't work but nothing ventured, nothing gained. I have Mizuna, Mibuna, Mustard, Rocket, white, red and rainbow chard, Chantenay carrots and White Lisbon spring onions a growing in my garden. Some might not work but for the price of a packet of seeds, I'm willing to give it a go!

Thanks Vixxi. Yes if you can grow things up there in Aberdeenshire, then surely I must be able to do things donw here in Berkshire even without the aid of a polytunnel. I think I shall be ready earlier in autumn next year with more seedlings at hand and ready to go.

    Thanks Margaret.

Yes I use short lengths of hosepipe bent over short pieces of canes pushed in the ground.
Both lettuce and cabbage have been in there now for a week. Only thing was, the top of the soil had patches of grey fluffy mildew. Pehaps I left the tunnel closed too long and should have opened it to let in some air. Any idea?

oh yes! Too wet and not enough ventilation. Water is condensing of plasric and sitting on soil. Only close if it's really going to freeze with these types of semi hardy veg.

I haven't got mine up yet - mid November to december usually and then ends open for ventilation til it gets cold

I have beetroot, cabbage and cauliflower seedlings to plant in my polytunnel so hoping for the best - must try the lettuce as well. However I am slightly doubtful as, after a very hard frost on Sunday night, what remained of my tomatoes, chillies, peppers and my kiwi plant which are in the PT were all black and withered on Monday.

I guess it depends on the light that plants need. Plants that stand shade should be OK I think?

The constant damp would be a problem too.

I can see that lettuce and salad crops would do OK 'cause they like shade. Are there any others?
