    hi,

I'm new here so hello to everyone!

I am growing in pots in my yard with some success ... I'm not sure whether to use the soil again. The soil I have been using seems to be very black, I'm struggling to remember the name but I bought it from Preston market and its in a red bag.

Also I seem to be growing a lot of foliage when I want leaves. I grew kale and ended up with stuff with no real leaves on it.

I'm hoping to grow garlic, onions and winter lettuce, possibly kale.

Hi Blue-Jazz, nice to meet you.

I'm a bit confused. When I think of foliage I think of leaves. Do you mean lots of stalk?

You can re-use soil/compost but if you want to grow good veg in your tubs I would suggest you go to a reputable garden centre for some compost, and tell them what you want to grow. Equally, others on this board will be able to prescribe the exact mixture for you.

Some plants like a high nitrogen content and some do not. Did you apply a lot of fertiliser/manure to the soil previously?

I shall be growing my plants mostly in pots next year, so Good luck,

    Summer

    Hello Blue Jazz, and welcome.
Do you mean your kale produced lots of loose leaves, but no real "heart"?
If so that could be down to the compost you used, or even that they were grown in tubs, and maybe therefore, not firm enough in the ground.
You can eat those loose leaves though, no need to waste them.
It`s not wise to re-use the same compost for the same type of plant, as this encourages diseases to build up in the compost.
Also the plants that have just grown in the compost will have taken up all the best of the food that was in there.

Sorry, yes I do mean stalk.

I am struggling for garden centres around here, the nearest and easiest is Homebase but the staff in there seem to be clueless! I dont drive so getting anything delivered is a bit of a nightmare, hence when the man on the market said he would deliver I accepted.

I did apply any fertiliser/manure to the soil, I did use some sort of "food" which you add to the watering can each month.

Thanks everyone! I will rebuy some more compost to grow again. The leaves didnt go to waste, I was just disappointed in what I got.

    I would replace the compost.

If you have grown a crop in it already, whether or not it has been a success, it will have taken a certain amount of goodness from the compost.

Add your spent compost to your compost bin or spread it around your borders.
