I have grown cabbage for the first time this year (plants from B+Q) all 8 off them are a treat, but I would like to keep at least 1 for Christmas dinner, question is will they survive just left in the ground or will they perish when the frost come's or should I lift them and store in the shed ?

They will survive the odd frost, no problems, they won't survive a long continued freeze-up.
Watch out if they are now already mature however that they don't start forming a seed head inside (they'll start getting elongated and looking like they'll split). A long bout of cold weather followed by warm weather can cause this to start happening.
My guess is you'll be right for Christmas and keeping them in the ground is the best way to keep them fresh.
It does depend which vareties you have, the summer cabbages don't survive the first frost. Mine, in the midlands, are looking very sad.

If they are in an exposed position you could cover them to protect them - with a sort of wigwam made out of branches. If they are the solid ball winter cabbage - they will be fine

Well done TopVeg, that's exactly what they look like , there was no name on the tag when I got them, they are solid like a football so guess they should be OK, thanks for all the replies.

Hope they do well! We all learn as we go along - and it is worth giving any ideas you have a try!
