Hi there i am quite hope full that Koala Girl is about on the boards but any one please could you tell me if it right that i can leave my strawberry plants in pots out side over winter? i can either leave them out side (where they will get wet) or under an open veranda ( where they will be dry)
Any thoughts please?
I've left strawberry plants in troughs exposed to the elements all winter and they've come back again and again, last year the trough was frozen solid.
Strawberries are very hardy, they'll be fine which ever place you choose.
Yes, strawberry plants are hardy.
Thankyou...i will leave them under the veranda and watch their progress in Spring.
Hi Penny
Yes, as the others have said, you can leave strawberry plants outside all winter. Mine were in their pots on the patio through all that snow in December and January with no ill effects They look a bit dejected during the cold weather but in the spring they suddenly burst into life and produce lots of new leaves.
Just to add another question, i have some mulch/compost ready to go onto my strawberry beds.Is it preferable to cover the whole bed including the plants or just leave the mulch around all the plants?
Best not to cover the leaves as this will leave the plants unable to photosynthesize. Whilst they would usually regenerate from the base anyway, it might weaken them. I usually throw the mulch on, then just give it a swift going over with a stiff long-handled brush, so that it settles more around the base of the plants.
