I tried to store beetroot and turnips in a box of sand. A tried and tested method I thought but they started to grow new srouts from the top. I then turned them upside down and put a lid over it so it was dark but they did it again. Anyone know what I did wrong?
It's probably been a bit warm,that's all.
The aim is to keep as cold as possible but frost -free.
It was summer when I did it so maybe now is a better time - I'll try again. Thanks for your help.
I tried to store beetroot in sand last year but it just went soft and unappetising. This year I've resigned myself to eating as much fresh as possible (and using for cakes) and I've pickled some. Be interested to hear if you have better luck.
