ive just bought 2 gooseberry bushes,a silly question but when is the best time to plant them and do they need some compost dug in with them regards chris
In asap, provided it's not frosty. They'll grow in more or less any soil provided it's not waterlogged and in full sun or partial shade. They are best planted in an open "airy" space as they do get very easily mildew if they are crowded. The main problem is usually the sawfly "caterpillar" which can completely defoliate the bush in the spring time. At the first sign of this pesky nuisance you must spray with a proper insecticide, not some mickey-mouse,"so-called"organic rubbish!
Yes get them in now as Barny says. Dig some well rotted manure into the bottom of the hole - they are going to be there for some time so give them a good start. I've heard top dressing with manure in spring is also recommended.

I would also add bonemeal, which is a slow release feed that lasts for a few years.
If you have not grown them before, it is worth reading up on pruning.
thank you all for your advice,i will get them in straight away. regards chris
Not the juice from boiled elderberry leaves and stalks, eh Barney ? Cheers, Tony.
