    Hi all,
spent the last few days getting the flower beds sorted and the lawn,

When i say sorted im talking about removing all the bedding plants that have done their job and provided both colour and seeds throughtout the summer,
The used plants will go to good use on the compost heap and the open space will be worked and bulbs have been planted and a light manuring done,

It's now time to have a look at the shrubs /trees ect that will be the first to flower in the spring, ie flowering cherry comes to mind Magnolia, ect, ive mulched these and those that have stakes and ties have been checked to see these are not to tight or to low down the trees.

The main rose bed has all been pruned and mulched (some 40 roses in this bed) so it's a resting time for that bed.

All the box has also been fed and the odd one given a little clip just to try and keep all the box border the same height, its the second year this one border has been planted up with box and it's starting to look something like a box edging, by the end of next year this box edging should start to knit together and look like a mini green 12inch wall around the rose beds.

If you've grown your own compfrey? nows a good time to add some to your compost heap (its one of the very best plants to add to a compost heap)
or get hold of a sack and fill it with the compfrey and put a brick in the sack tie the opening and put the sack into a 45 gal drum filled with water and leave it there until spring time, you'll have one of the best plant feeds you can get (mixture rate 1 part liquid compfrey to 9 parts rain water.

Time to bubble wrap the greenhouse if your over wintering plants,
also time to remove shading from the glass (plants need good light during the winter and the days are shorter as is the light so remove the shading and clean the glass while your doing this job.

Put all clay pots that are not being used indoors away from frost if you dont want them to crack in bad freezing weather?

PUT HOSE/pipes away and cover out door taps to protect from freezing weather.

If you have any out door large water butts ? place a couple of tennis balls in the water to help stop the water forming an ice solid crust.

Also ensure that birds cant get into the top of water tubs/butts ect by using chicken wire over the filling area as the birds get in to drink but cant get out again and drown.

Well just a few of many jobe to get on with now the weather's turning.

It`s a bit the same here-this morning I dug up a few boxes and started cutting back all the stuff that got out of control when Jenny first got sick.

    My back aches !!

4smilingcat6: I'm sure you'll soon have things back in shape. Nice to have you back on the boards.

I've just become a weekend gardner overnight, with the changing of the clocks I'm getting home from work in the dark so will need to get up earlier to check on my bird feeders, tidying up will be limited to weekends.

On the subject of feeding the birds, they love the mixed bird feed and fat balls I put out but there have been no takers for the peanuts all summer, should I give up or will winter feeders have them.
