i have just been listening to radio 2 and was wondering if human urine would keep the cats away as i am plagued by 8 yes 8 of them who live next door,i am new to growing my own and have had to net the whole of my veg patch because of the problem, but all they do is deficate on my lawn or believe it or not the concrete path, the owner just doesnt seem to give a damn, people like this should not be allowed to own cats,if anyone has any thoughts on this matter i would gladly listen to them on whether they think this extreme solution would possibly work,

An annoying problem and nigh on impossible to fix. Whether urine would put cats off, I do not know. Mothballs do have limited success but their effectiveness lessens with rain.
I think that having 8 cats in 1 house roaming free is anti-social. Perhaps I'm the odd-ball? You could get a dog or better still a crocodile?

Hi Chris,
We have 2 dogs (cat unfriendly) and we still get the cats from next door but one in the garden.
I have heard about using orange peel to keep the cats off but I have never tried it myself.
I shall watch this post with great interest.
My elderly mother had a powerfull water pistol which she used, it certainly made the cats shift; what liquid you fill it with, is your decision!
I think my mother's weapon of choice was a 'Super Soaker', other models are available.

I have just remembered something I read years ago. Apparently cats do not like snakes and when my children were young they had one of those rubber ones (quite cheap from ELC) and I left it in the sand pit.
We never had a cat go in the sand pit again.

hi chris
I have a cat ( altho we do not get along it the hubbys) have you tried one of those high pitch cat scarer thingys i've seen then in the shops, i also will be investing in a super soaker this xmas as i am getting a lot of little visiters to my newly turned over front garden ,
happy squrting
It would make the garden smelly, great for plants. Old neighbour at 6 cats which would go in our garden. The owner is responsible for any mess/damage same as a dog owner. Poo was returned over the fence. Used orange peel, useful. Water pistol very effective. Cats learnt not to come into garden or walk along wall. Would run away if door handle turned.

Hello, there are cat deterrents including a sensor controlled cat water squirter and cat prickler which are gentle spikes on a roll which you place on your walls/fence.
Hi chris, i have 3 cats that use my borders as a toilet my wife told me that her father put empty pop or minrel water bottles filled with water in the garden. I tried this out in the front garden 2 weeks ago & it seems to have worked i have not seen any signs of the cats paying a visit.

Yes, apparently they do not like their reflection thinking its another cat.
That's interesting. I am going to try it.
Next door acquired two kittens who permanently use my garden and another one pays occasional visits. I did as suggested by posters when I asked about getting rid of cats, have my hose pipe handy and would casually walk outside and turned it on full blast. They now run as soon as they see me. However, they still use my garden as their loo when I am not around.
I think urine would put a cat off if you could get it to stay still while you pee!
...or load your water pistol with it.

Human urine to stop cats???
It depends on the cat-some years ago my beloved late Conker was in the greenhouse with me when I decided to have a pee.
No sooner had I finished than he joined me
Poor you, 8 definitely seems more than your fair share. I have 4 regulars but I don't think there is much I can do about it - I do go out and clap my hands occasionally and they scarper, but it is half hearted because I actually like cats although I would prefer not to have them do their bit in my garden - it is most annoying having to constantly wear rubber gloves . I think the only real solution is to give your neighbours the gardenining bug then the cats will have a dilemma over which newly dug garden to roam.
The water scarecrow is the most effective option against cats unless you are there 24/7 to take aim with a water pistol. You can google for suppliers.
You could also ask your neighbours to create a toilet area in their garden. It doesnt have to be a grand affair, just a corner where they have sand and/or cat litter which is regularly cleaned of their deposits.
