Just a thought. . . . After just planting 120 broad bean seeds in coffee cups I got to thinking. Does any harm come to the emerging plants as the weather can access the roots in pots easier than if the beans were in the ground with the roots further away from the inclement weather ? Discuss. Cheers, Tony.
There's no question that roots are more likely to freeze in a pot outside than in the ground. The ground acts as a giant heat store. Of course in seriously cold weather both can freeze, but pots freeze first.
Brrr, but you are turning the beans into mammals, when in reality the cold just slows them down to a stop. Providing the beans are winter hardy like 'Aquadulce', then they will fine and germinate when the weather turns milder.

Instead of coffee cups, I use the centres from toilet rolls and kitchen towel rolls that have been cut down to a similar size.
I find that you can get a dozen in an ice cream tub.
When the beans are about an inch or so tall, I plant them out.
In your case, as you have already planted yours in cups, I would suggest that, during this period of bitter weather, you either cover your pots or move them inside during the night and put them out during the day.
My November sown beans have survived the cold and now in the rain are emerging from the soil.
