I just took delivery of 115 bare root beech hedge saplings and 5 birch tree feathered whips on Friday - bad timing you might say! I woke up saturday to an inch of snow and frozen ground. Even my raised veg beds are frozen solid, so I can't heel in my saplings in to them. Is it OK to stick the saplings in large containers of straight compost and keep them in the garage until things have warmed up or can anyone recommend anything else?

What you suggest will be ok, just keep the roots cool, moist and dark (but not frozen) until you can plant them out.
Or you could bunch them together in bundles of 10 or so, and place them in black bin bags or compost bags. Put a couple of shovelfulls of soil or compost in the bottom of the bag for the roots to rest on. Leave the tops sticking out of the bag to get fresh air.

Yes, that's fine. Although they have no leaves, you still need to stop them drying out, and compost around the roots will do that.

Many thanks for your replies As_Iff and AlinaW - I wasn't sure if the compost might be a bit too rich for the roots. I now have to wait for the some of 24 bags I have stacked on the driveway to defrost - may need to bring them in to the hallway to thaw against the radiator - My Wife will just love me...!!

I had the same problem with load of hawthorn whips 8 years ago. As they were completely bare I kept them in water in the garage till we got a thaw an dthey could be planted. Every single one survived.
However, compost should do the trick too but they'll still appreciate an hour's soaking before being planted. Don't thaw them in front of radiators. They won't like it. Let them thaw slowly in a garage or porch or shed.
