Hi Everyone
I have just got my own allotment after a long search and wait. I'm delighted with it. It's about 10m by 3m and I have already have it dug over;fortunately before this cold spell so the frost is already breaking it up further for me.
I believe it is already very fertile as every spade full I turned I lifted at least 2 or 3 worms, a good indication of fertility. It is lovely sandy loam, drains exceptionally well, slopes gently and is open and south facing.
I have cultivated plots of land before but never under such ideal conditions so I'm feeling very optimistic with what I'll be able to produce.
If any one has any advice on how I can be really ambitious on what I can grow and how intensively I can work this plot I would be very grateful.
Hope to keep every-one informed on my progress.
But even so, different plants thrive in very different kinds of soil.
I had one heck of a job with Lavendar until I actually bought a bag of grit and planted in it! Now it is doing well.
Spuds would not do very well in grit eh?
Welcome on board Stevie. You`ll see plenty of advice, all in good time.

I would grow my crops in rows running North/South, especially ones that flower eg beans, peas etc. My reason is that they require pollination and bees work best in the sun. With rows N/S, the sun shines on one side in the forenoon and the other in the afternoon.
Whilst free-draining is desirable in some of the monsoon conditions we sometimes experience, during long periods with no rain, it can be a curse, so incorporate manure in you rotation plan.
Plan? If possible, use a four-year rotation plan.
ENJOY! If you don't enjoy it, it becomes work, and work is the curse of the working class!
Hi Stevie & welcome to the board. You should find plenty of advice on here & if there is something you particularly want to ask about, just go ahead & ask! Remember, there's no such thing as a silly question! We can all benefit from even, what may appear to you to be something silly, the simplest of questions.
Hoping to hear from you often on the progress of your allotment. I may be able to pick up tips as well as this year has been my first year working on an allotment. While waiting for my own I'm helping a friend from church to manage his. I'm learning things as well.
