    Hi all,
todays been a dry/ mild day and im pleased to say the snow's melting away,

Now here in france "Monday" is half day closing in the shops and so having said this im sure you'll understand if you have a need for something and you have a mind like my other half ?
,at about 11-30am i was asked to go to the local store and get some yeast (for bread making)

Well off i shot in the car and as the shops close by 12 noon on the dot "but if no customers are in the shop i swear they put the fingers on the clock forward by 15 mins, and close up until tuesday.

But i just about made it and managed to find the yeast and with great speed the lady on the till took my payment (and i think she tried to smile "

well her mastache moved sideways as she pushed me through the door and pulled the door blind down .

As i was getting back into the car i was tapped on my shoulder "i thought the hairy till lady was going to mug me"

but it was a friend i made here some 3 years ago and the friendship was through gardening,
he' some how heard that i loved gardening and one afternoon appeared at our gate looking a bit sheepish as he asked

'Do you know anything about lawn mowers that dont cut correctly"??

it was a ride-on he was asking about and after a cup or three of coffee and a walk around my garden we sorted his problem out

(His ride -on was cutting very thin "scalping the lawn everytime he turned the mower round to continue down the next bit of lawn that needed cutting,

it was due to one tyre not being inflated enough" and this was causing the mower to lean to low as he turned the machine around.

We become good friends and had many a laugh But he had'nt been round for about 4 weeks and by chance i met his wife in the same store i was in today and it was then she gave me the bad news,

While he was in the garden he'd blinded himself bending down, He'd not seen a cane he'd tied his tomatoes to and the cane had gone through his eye socket.

It's been a long battle to try to save his eye and one battle he lost "He's now got a false eye,

The reason im telling you of this accident is because it was'nt his intention to loose his sight in one eye "But by just covering all canes" it's an accident that could be avoided.

So by using tennis balls / yogurt tubs, even plastic pots filled with straw will stop you poking your eye out and earwigs will hide in these pots (empty them out each day)
But no matter what you use ensure you dont make this mistake.

When i arrived home my wife had an idea i was'nt best pleased and when i told her who i'd just seen she understood.

And the yeast? I'd left it on top of the car roof !

Well they do say man can't live on just bread dont they?

    How dreadful.

There was a thread on here earlier in the year about covering the ends of canes and so I asked friends to save me widgets out of beer cans which fit snuggly on the ends of narrow canes, if not I've found a sharp knife can be used to trim the edges off the canes so they do fit on the tips.

Hi Pun pun, I remember that thread clearly because my sister in law nearly lost her eye the same way. She was so lucky.

I think you should write this thread again but put a proper warning in the title so others will read it. Your current title meant that I nearly didn't read it. I tend to brows the threads and only read the ones that have subjects that interest me.

All the best for Christmas etc, Sue

Hello, something similar to this happened to me although thankfully I only got hit on the cheek so nothing to compare to your friend. I was pushing a bean cane into heavy ground when suddenly it snapped into 2 parts. I fell onto the bottom broken half of the stick which was impaled into the ground . My face went into the bottom bit cutting my cheek requiring stitches. But I was lucky. It could have been a whole lot worse.

Hi to you all and thanks for your feed backs ref this thread,

I really do feel bad about this happening, the person and wife had only just retired and he was doing gardening after so many years of a full working life,

He did say to me the first few weeks after we got to talking how much he really enjoyed his retirement, (he had the jitters when he first reitired) wondering what he was going to do with himself all day "every day" and moving to france from england, And then that had to happen.

Like im sure a lot of people in their early 60's ive seen work mates and friends die, and it really makes you think?

When you get to the stage in life that you think "and know it" that we've so much more in life than wealth, money, or keeping up with the jones's.

Live each day to the full and dont waste time, (you just dont know when lifes clock will stop)
