I am considering investing in a couple Cherry trees to grow as fan or espalier against garden fence in the veg patch, Can anyone recommend any varieties? Cross pollenation requirements? What about root stock? Should I be buying them bare rooted at this time of year?
Any problems / special care to be aware of?
Would welcome any advice.
P.S. No great rush as the ground is still frozen solid

Cherry trees are now mono- clonal/Self pollinating, thanks to recent breeding developments.

Good evening tiptonnic,
funny you should ask that. I'm expecting a delivery of a Stella Cherry tree on Colt rootstock just for the purpose of training as an Espalierby courier tomorrow.
If recommendations are allowed, I have had nothing but help in choosing a suitable tree / rootstock from Blackmoor Nurseries. They asked me what I was doing with it so they could select a suitable tree.
With the inclement weather, they have kept me up to date via email as to the postponement and eventual delivery date. Check 'em out. Cheers, Tony.
Just received my cherry tree and blaeberry bush. Both well protected for transportation and the enclosed instructions as to their care are easy to understand. Cheers, Tony.
I have two sweet cherry trees: "Sunburst" and "Summer Sun" growing on dwarfing Gisela 5 rootstocks. I bought them bare rooted. They are only two years old. Last summer they both had fruit already. The birds had more than we did. This year I'm planning to enclose them in a fruit cage. It's essential to keep the birds off.

If you are in the vicinity all the time, you can act as your own bird scarer.
Once forbidden, the offender does not return.
