    Hi all,
I hope your all enjoying this freezing weather and are in the mood for a little lesson ref gardening.

If anyone read my 3 seperate daily offering ref compost/manure and how it all works,?

Well as part of that little lot of writing's i did say that during the winter nights its not a bad thing to get yourself infront of the fire, a nice drink to your own taste and read a gardening book,

I did go on to say that the likes of the animal rescue and OXfam shops always have lots of gardening books both old and new for a good price.

Well just to try and help you understand a little more about OXFAM and gardening,

i thought i'd explain about a system of trying to get back some of the plants we have lost over the years for one reason or an other, and once they have gone
    thats it (or is it??????)

Approx 6 years ago the organization called the D.U.C.Distinct, uniform and constant was formed,

Now what the D.U.C. is all about is that all new seeds have to conform to certain rules, both to ensure they are safe to eat and also "and this is the important part"
so that we can have a seed bank of all seeds and not end up loosing plants in the future as we have in the past due to no records being kept .

But some people have been sending old seed packets they've found to the seed bank (D.U.C.) to see it they can do anything with them?

And these people have indeed managed in one noted case to sow some seeds that we're found in an oldmans shed by his son who was clearing out the shed after his father had died .

His father was the last known grower of a lettuce called bloody warrior, "it was named this due to the fact it had red blotches over it's leaves and had a really nice taste we all thought was lost for ever.

The D.U.C. tried sowing these seeds and managed to get the above lettuce to germinate and grow,

Now all seeds throughout the united kingdom have to be tested by the D.U.C.
and the reason being is not only to have records of all seeds but also to ensure we buy 100% the seeds that are on the pkt and these must be able to germinate
In other words it's to ensure the seeds in the packet are all there and not a half mix of a cheaper seed.
As ive said this "D.U.C." has been going a little over 6 years now but it was from a large donation from "OXFAM" that got this underway.

As you know OXFAM helps feed a lot of people and seed's are the future way of growing more food to help such needed people.

Well thats the lesson over for tonight, I just thought (hoped) you'll now think about calling into the OXFAM shop and buying a book or two from them?

after all the money really will go to a good cause like ive told you about tonight.

    Regards PunPun.

    Calendula

    Way off topic?

Okay its about growing seeds, particularly the maintenance of good seed strains and viable seed.
It also mentions a seed strain that was rescued.
If people did not do this work then many seed strains would be lost.
So to me probably very relevant in the grow your own section and I was interested to hear that this work has been funded by Oxfam

Right section, on topic - so why the call to the hosts
