........I have about nine.
They were used for carrying books when I moved house. I had some success with them when I filled them with compost to grow carrots, parsnips, onions etc and even shallow rooted salad stuff.
The carrots etc were generally quite thin. Now the crates are splitting with lumps breaking off. I only have a small garden and a small patio and can't afford to spend a lot of money.

They sound useful, where did you first get them?
I use plastic crates that had mushrooms in that I got from the market. I wouldn't have thought they were deep enough to grow much, and they have a lattice base and sides so it wouldn't keep in the soil properly. The ones you have seem much more useful.

Spud grow bags are fairly hard wearing, Wilkinsons sell the cheapest but you'll need to wait till they get their gardening stock back in.
Are there any small local nurseries near you. One near me gives away wooden fruit crates when you purchase a plant, to carry it home in. They could be lined with plastic for shallow rooted veg ie salad stuff. I was thinking of using mine as gravel trays.
The same nursery also gives away plastic crates which are alittle deeper.

I think I bought the crates somewhere like Wilkinsons. I'm looking more now to deep wooden crates. The nursery idea is good. I would welcome further suggestions.
Also, the potato grow bags. Could these be used for other veg? I am assuming that most are not very broad at base.

For salad and lettuce, before I had a garden I had some luck with cardboard boxes lined with bin bags.
