  Soil carries diseases, which can attack seeds and emerging seedlings. It can also carry weed seeds and has less nutrition in for seedlings ...and poor drainage. Don't do it!

  Hi whatalotti,
  compost comes in verious sorts, ie seed / also whats known as number 2 and 3 compost, plus verious special compost for verious plants that dont like certain
  things ie some dont like a lime based compost etc.
  
  But all the bought compost are vacummed sealed to ensure that no bacteria etc is in the bag, now the least shall we say additive made compost is the seed compost and this is because seeds have thier own food supply when sown and until the seeds start to grow, But one or two things they dont need is bad drainage, blocked light or heavy soil that holds to much water and causes the seed to rot, plus heat needs to be available to germinate the seed.
  It's at this stage "ie when the seed is growing" that we need to give a covering that is light, good for drainage, and clean, if you use a greenhouse you dont want anything other than a clean area for seeds/plants etc and the bought vacummed bags are the nearest your going to get for this early start in the seeds growing circle.
  
  Compost number 2 and 3 are more for the feeding of the correct chemicles needed for root growth, leave growth and fruit / flower growth , when the seeds got to a certain size and needs to be fed as it's by this stage used all it's own food up.
  
  You can make your own compost but as has already been said if it's come from the compost heap the chances are it wont be as clean as the bought vac/packed compost and you'll need to ensure your own compost has all the needs of the plants /seeds your growing.? As ive said some plants needs are an other plants poison,????
  
  Some seeds are sown direct into the outside and the advantage of using compost added to the soil is that your ensuring the the soil has a correct P.H reading "ie the soil is healthy and has all the verious plants/seeds need to grow.
  
  It's a bit like humans, if you only eat junk food you'll not be getting all the vitimins you should have and your body will not fight off germs and you'll not have the strength and energy you should have, (It's the same for plants, feed them the correct food, give them the correct light, and weather conditions and you should have good results,

  I found the trouble with using soil is that it contains weed seeds. When you give them warmth and water they spring into life, and when they are young, it`s hard to tell which seedlings are weeds, and which ones are the plants you wanted.
