Hi all
Grew this kale for the first time last year and it was very productive. Plants now looking a bit sad (but still alive & not diseased) after what the weather has thrown at them. Is it best to start from scratch next season or can I leave last season's plants in place and expect them to recover? Opinion on the Web is divided (unsurprisingly)
Thanks

If you plant a few seeds, but leave your old plants in to see how they 'do' , you have all your options covered. Cheers, Tony.
I grow it here in Italy. It's a cold weather specialist. You never see it here in warmer months. Leave it as a seed source if you want to but plant afresh in autumn.
The plants will recover in Spring and produce flowering shoots, which you can use as sprouting broccoli. They are bi-annuals. Start afresh for next year.
i have grown kale for 3 yrs now and have found if i leave them to set seed new plants spring up with no extra work same for parsnips as long as you dont mind where plants grow i think this is great
Hi Mike,
Leave the flowering top to produce seeds for next year. I have a separate bed in my lottie especially for producing seed. I take the biggest and strongest of everything and plant it in the "seed bed" to save the seeds. Sometimes I have a little chaff but it plants along with the seeds just fine! I hear the only thing you can't collect seeds from are F1's (they don't grow true) and Squashes (they can cross to become something poisonous I heard. It seems they're somewhat promiscuous!)
You can't beat free seeds though. They'll also be used to your growing conditions/climate being home produced.
