Most of the young plant nurseries will start supplying garden centres from next week. You will probably only find a limited range at first, but as the season progresses more varieties will become available.
Remember the season is still early so the plants will need to be kept in the warm, even a heated greenhouse may not be warm enough for them.
Hey thanks the2jays,popped down to my nearest b&q today and they had a few young plants.Got some Bacopa,Verbena,Fuchsia and Surfinia, just the job to get me started. Looking forward to potting them on now.79p each or 10 for £7.
If i was buying summer bedding as plants, rather than sowing the seed, I wouldn`t buy them this early.
I`d let the nursery use their heat to keep them warm for a couple of months, because the plants cannot go outside, anyway till May at the earliest.
They won`t be such a bargain if they have to be kept warm throughout Feb and March.
I agree, we could still have another really cold spell yet, winter is far from finished.
Got to say over the last 7or 8 years I have always bought young basket plants early, grown them on for a few weeks, then taken cuttings, multiplied my stock, and by late May early June have lots of baskets growing away merrily and more plants coming through.I do sow my own bedding and vegetables and greenhouses are well stocked therefor in the long run I reckon I save a fortune. Also I believe in buying almost as soon as plants arrive in b&q,homebase etc as they are generally in tip top condition, leave it a few weeks and they are generally not so good due to intermittent watering practices, inappropriate placing within the store etc.
Yes, good point Angela if you are taking cuttings off them, and thus increasing your stock. In that case it is worth buying now.
