Whilst up at the big orange DIY store, are we allowed to mention names like B&Q?, i found what has to be the bargain of the year, ok its only Feb but bear with me. In the section where all the doors are, prob the furthest point away from the gardening bit, I found packets of wooden wedges they use to fit door frames etc. They're about 8"x1", 14 in a pack and would make brilliant plant or veg labels. I,ve soaked mine in some old teak oil i had lying around and they look great and for just 10p you cant go wrong.
Thanks for the tip Banjo!
Strangely I was just getting ready to go to B&Q when I saw your post! I have purchased 3 packs of the wedges! (Dont tell them they rang up at only 3p a pack though will you!! Couldn't believe it when I checked my printout!)
I dont have anything to treat them, but at that price I can make do!
Thanks for that xx
I also noticed some packs of rot resistant thick twine/thin rope by the garden tools - 30 metres for 10p. I bought some. I don't know what I'm going to do with it yet, but at 10p it was a bargain and will come in useful for something!
Always keep the lateral thinking gene switched on. Cheers, Tony.

Thank you for the heads up about these door wedges. Whilst in B&Q buying paint I remembered your post about said items.
I'm going to paint mine with blackboard paint that I have left over from another DIY project. I bought loads as I'm going to sell the painted ones in our allotment shop as an alternative to the plastic labels
It doesn't matter if they last only a season as they are so cheap.
Cheers

An even cheaper method of creating plant labels is to cut strips from your marj/sunflower/olive spread cartons. I got 50 from one tub last weekend, ideal for seed modules and small pots. You'll need a permanent marker to write on them with but these are available in any shop that sells stationary.
