Hi everyone i have finally got the key to my allotment, and have a few important questions to ask, if thats ok.
1. Wheres the best place for the compost heap.
2. I am in a very exposed part of the allotment on a slight hill high up about 20 feet from the road and want to grow some bushes /cover to reduce the blustery winds and could do with some advice on whats best for quick growth and relitively cheap . I did think about lylandi but someone said this would effect my veg growing?
So as you can see i need expert advice. Many thanks .
Whatever you do, don't plant Leylandii.
Hi, I don't think it really matters where you site uour CH, somewhere handy and airy would do me. Where is your hedge going, at the top of the slope or the bottom? And what is the direction of the prevailing wind? Either way, I would plant a beech hedge. Mine has withstood 2 desperately cold winters, whereas my escallonia and griselinia hedges have perished. Beech is relatively quick to grow, depending on the height when you buy of course, and are easily got in bare root state. Although deciduous, you get the benefit of lovely russet foliage all winter, which does give shelter. I agree, steer clear of leylandii!!!
I would build the compost heap at the top of the hill. During the year small (light) amounts of vegitation regularly going into the heap. Next year large quantities of well rotted compost (heavy) can be carried down the hill. Simples! Cheers, Tony.
I agree with a beech hedge, quite dense, decorative and hardy. You can add the leaves to your compost heap which you could place on the least useful part of the slope at the edge of the allotment.
I drew this article up along with its related links and slide show to cover such a question;
I hope it is of some help to you.
Many thanks to all those usefull tips am going to source the beech hedge this weekend the sooner the better. ! Compost site decided. Thankyou once again no doubt i will be asking more questions soon.
