Is it too early to sow pea's - early onwards. They were sown on 11th March last year and I got a good crop. I didn't sow any more until May but If I can be disiplined enough this year I'm hoping to stagger sowing some veg, to get a continuous harvest, pea's being one. Can they be started off indoors on the window ledge now before going into the GH, then be planted out after the soil been warmed up with cloches.

The distructions say they can be sown in February for a first crop in May, only it still seems too cold.

I'm in the NW and the garden's fairly sheltered. Temps in the GH haven't gone below 2 for a while although we've had some frosty mornings and nights.

    Hello zoomer

I sowed some peas*Hurst Green Shaft) today in root trainers and popped them in the cold frame.

I actually planted some Early Onwards back in mid November thinking it was a different variety and they not only survived but put on excellent growth during all that snow in the cold frame which I gave added insulation by wrapping with bubble wrap.

I took the bubble wrap off today, admittedly I do live in London, but our allotment site is pretty exposed and the largest wind tunnel ever.

Personally I think it is too early and I think the way you suggest( the windowsill) will be too warm

    If you want to sow early put them in the greenhouse see the slide show here;

After you have read this go to the 'home' page and follow the 'go, signs or the alphabetical index for information and sowing dates for the other things you plan on sowing.

I started seeds indoors about five weeks ago and planted out sturdy seedlings yesterday. The temps here in central Italy are hovering around 2 or 3C with the soil around the same. But I also planted out a ton of seeds yesterday. They will take a while to germinate but will come good. I planted seeds at the same time last year and they all germinated, even after a heavy, very unexpected snowfall between planting and germination. Resilient things, peas!

    I agree with novicedippychick.

Of course it depends on the variety of seed sown, but the instructions on the packet would give a clue.

I sowed mine in November, and they have survived snow, ice and frost.

As mice are known to burrow down and eat the peas before they germinate, I sprout mine before I sow them by putting the seed on a few layers of damp kitchen towel, in an ice cream tub.

When they have sprouted, sow them. That way you know the seed is good, and you should have no misses in your rows.

I have such a lot of seeds left from last year and if the packets are anything to go by many won't be viable next year so rather than have bad stock I was going to sow more this year.

The pea's are early onwards, the packet says they can be sown February in pots and my plastic GH seems to be alot warmer than the glass GH, so they could go in there. I have approx 150 seeds left so I've nothing to lose apart from some toilet rolls and 6 seeds.

I have some broad beans too, Aquadulce Claudia, only about half the ones sown in October have come through the winter, was thinknig of sowing some of them now and some more in about 4 weeks time.

Finally I have some carrots, Nantes Frutbund(fast crop), I had a really poor crop when I tried to grow carrots but thought I'd try again in pots. These can be sown in February.

I put the pea and broad bean seeds on some damp kitchen roll last night so if they've sprouted by Sunday will sow them then.

It is quite early, I think. Maybe give it about a month just so it warms up a little bit more. I am a big fan of peas and have grown a lot of varieties, most of them say March. Although, you can sow peas now in a greenhouse and they should survive. If you want to play it safe though, leave it until March.

Hi zoomer, I think it would depend on what part of the country you're in. Although I have brought early onward peas and aquadulce claudia through so far in my cold frame, I do live in the South.

Down on the allotment today quite a good number were sowing peas and broad beans in lo rolls to go in GH or Cold frame.

I think gardening is instinctual, so if it feels right as long as you protect your seedlings, hey ho!!!!!

PS: I planted some Early Nantes towards the end of the season last year in a large pot popped them in the cold frame and they have survived and doing well.

I'm in the south too and my broad beans and carrots have also survived the winter under their fleece.

I always grow Early Onwards from peas saved from the previous year. I start to sow mine towards the end of February in the conservatory (using my toilet rolls-in-a-yoghurt-pot method).
