I'm so pleased with myself! I know it's a little bit sad, but my local greengrocer has agreed to give me as many of those light wooden vegetable crates as I like for free... I feel a little bit bad though as they are unaware that I will infact be growing my own salads and pakchoi in them... oops!
I saw it online somewhere - all you have to do is line them with plastic, poke a few drainage holes in and then fill with compost: cheap and easy salad bed! They have handles too and they are not too large so you can still move them about easily even when wet.

Not sad at all Niblet, in fact I'd be rather please with myself if I'd managed to get a free supply of vegetable crates! Well done.

But like you say, best not tell the greengrocer what you're using them for smiley - winkeye

I did this last year and it was very successful. Had one box into which I planted peas and cut them for pea shoots in salads. For the other I bought a pack if Lidl's 'Living Salad', divided it into plantlets - amazing how many there were - and planted them out and put the box in a sheltered, sunny spot. They grew very well and I had cut and come again lettuces for weeks.

    Happy growing.

Well done Niblet! I wish there was somewhere around here where I could get some.

The method I use is one which cannot be moved, so I have to make sure that I put them where they won't be in the way. I get a strong cardboard box from the supermarket (one which has had something heavy like apples in it) and line it with an empty compost sack with holes punched in it. I then fill that with compost and grow salad leaves in it. It lasts all summer and then you can chuck the whole lot away at the end of autumn.

Here is one I did earlier......

There are two local farm shops near me where you can get wooden crates providing something is purchased. I've come away with 1/2 dozen eggs in the really big one's....smiley - smiley

It's not sad at all. Mine are lined with plastic and being used as gravel trays. They look quite designerish and yee oldie worldly in the GH and for me it's about using something which is available and free.

My favourite garden centre has a large box of plant pot holders. The moulding that half a dozen plant pots sit in. These are free. A lettuce seed in each (with suitable compost) great.

Moderators. . . How about a section for gardening on a budget? Things to use in place of other things but CHEAPER or better still free! ! ! ! Cheers Tony.
