I planted some onion bulbs last year at about mid-summer. They seemed to be growing nicely, until the rain came. I went on holiday and when I came back, most of the bulbs had gone. The same thing with my garlic happened too.
However, in the last few months, I'd noticed that a few of the onions had come back. Honestly, I don't have a problem, but why are they coming and going?
I'd say mid summer is way too late to plant onion and garlic bulbs. They would have grown a bit and responded to daylight and temperatures and shut down for the season - i.e. finished their growth.
If the onions are sprouting now I think you'll find they'll throw up flower stalks in early spring, I doubt they'll make a bulb again now.
The garlic if it reappears will most probably form a good bulb around June however!
Thanks a lot for that. But can I just say the actual bulbs had disappeared too. :S
Hungry boids or other critters!
That's what I thought. Thanks for your help everyone. This year I'll do it properly with my onions and garlic.
