I tried to buy some just now (to start off some chillies) I usually seek it out every year for sowing of small seeds in pots and trays imagining it's better than general purpose compost but I couldn't find any and I want to crack on.
Do you think matters very much or should I travel further a field to other GC's in my quest of just use the general purpose I've got lots of to hand ?

Hi. We stock Arthur Bowers John Innes Seed and that seems ok...although maybe a bit heavy. On our production side we use a fine peat based product with 5% loam and that works very well. For the retail market Arthur Bowers have brought out a 100% peat product called Traditional Potting Compost, based on commmercial products, or there is New Horizon Multipurpose compost which is peat free. I have several customers who use this for seed sowing and have reported good results. I hope that helps a bit
Add some silver or sharp sand to what you have, say about 3 or 4 to compost to one sand.
Just measure out enough for what seeds you need to sow then you can prick out in to the remainder of your GP compost
see here;
I`d add some sand as TeeGee said. Also chop your compost up with your scoop or your garden trowel to get rid of the lumps.
