Can someone tell me the best time of the year to plant raspberries? I thought autumn was the time to do it when there would still be a bit of warmth in the soil but my local garden centres didn't have any plants for sale. They seem to have them now but I thought the ground would be a bit too cold and soggy (in Glasgow) for them.

You are right (especially in Glasgow). Raspberries are best grown from bare-root plants in the autumn. There's a basic guide here:
Cheers
Thanks, I'm sure I looked at that page earlier but didn't see the "in autumn" bit!
Ah well, I suppose I'll have to wait a few months and make do with the blackcurrant bush I planted a few months ago, assuming it survived the winter.

You can plant bareroot raspberry canes right through the winter months until they start to come into leaf. Only time you wouldnt plant is if there is still frost in the soil. Go get it done!
I would buy the canes now and sheuch them in (separate them out and cover the roots with soil) and when the soil is a bit drier and certainly before the end of March, plant out properly. I have been doing this in Fife for more years than I care to remember.
Ok, I'll give it a go!
