Get your sweet potato from an organic greengrocers, Give it a good scrub in warm water. Locate the root end and stick three toothpicks in it around the circumference and stand in a vase with water half way up the potato and the root end facing south. Shoots will appear. . . . cut them off with a bit of patato and plant up. Or thats what I'm doing. Cheers, Tony.
Or.....
Just stick it in a pot layed down like a submarine and keep it warm and moist.
Little sprouts will appear around the outside.
When they are about 3-4 ins tall cut them off with a bit of root and re-pot.
Also search this site for more detailed instructions.

You can grow your own slips as described in the other posts but to get decent crops you'd be better off buying a few plants already established in pots. Several companies supply these. Sweet pots need a long growing season and getting slips to establish in pots and grow on vigorously can be tricky. Full marks to anyone who's done this successfully.
If you want to give it a go, this site has all the info you need:
