An excellent variety I find!
So much so I grow these as my maincrop rather than a growing a maincrop variety, although I do grow a few Pink fir apple as a treat!
i have read its a second early? Â
Yes it is!
It is a good 'slug resistant' variety and it stores well.
I will be eating mine well in to March this year and possibly April subject to what is on the menu.
It is also a good 'exhibition' variety I have woon a few red cards with them over the years.
what is a good is first variety potato?Â
I find 'Rocket' as good as any, it has good size.
It is a good all rounder in the kitchen, and providing I don't lift them, my crop lasts until my Kestrel are ready
when is best planting this? regardsÂ
This has been my programme this last couple of years;
Start chitting; 8th Feb, I'm a bit later this year as they only arrived yesterday so they are now chitting.
I don't differentiate with my planting date as some other growers do.
I put 1st, 2nd earlies and maincrop varieties on the same day. which last year was 28th April
I earthed up on the 2nd of June
Lifted and stored my Kestrel on 23rd September.
I started eating my Rocket in early July.
There is a picture of Rocket & Kestrel here (click on them to enlarge) and details on how I grow them.
And this is how I chit them;
I think a lot is in the preparation of the soil. Since my neibour has rotovated before I plant I have had much better crops. International kidney for earlies and picasso for main crop seem to do well on our site.

I'll second Tee Gee on the Pink Fir Apples (a knobbly potato variety...nothing to do with apples whatsoever!). They are devine. I don't grow or eat many potatoes but these are a special treat for me and I absolutely adore them
Highly recommended!

PFAs for me too. They keep very well - I have just used the last of last years crop minus a few kept back as seed potatoes.
