Dear all
I am going to try growing strawberries for the first time this year
After looking at the Ken Muir site I have decided I want to get 4 kinds, and have the following in mind
Gariguette, Cambridge Late Pine, Fenella, Mara de Bois
Are there any opinions or pros/cpns on the above 4 or perhaps you have a different reccomendation? Also any tips will be gladly recived!
Many thanks
ping please, would love to hear your opinions on the tastiest strawberry varities. many thanks
I currently grow 'Fresca' & 'Elsanta'.
Mara des Bois are WONDERFUL. They are vigorous and prolific. they flower and fruit alike mad, and their taste is fabulou- a real'Wimbledon strawberry" taste, AND they last all summer until they get frosted.
I bought garigette, and Cambridge late pine and Chelsea pensioner. They were all good, but I think perhaps the early ones suffered from that hot April. The Chelsea pensioner was particularly good, I notice they're not for sale this year, or perhaps run out. You do need good strawberries before the Mara des Bois come in, you should remove the flowers from Mara des Bois until July when the others finish, understandable when you see the amount they produce the rest of the year. I had my last strawberry on 1st November.
I'm considering getting more, all my friends were angling for some last year!
Good choices,
Lottie
wow thanks Lottie - thats a great help!
my 1st go at strawberries too, I planted them bare rooted back in the autumn - they have survived the winter well so looking forward to see how well they do

I have bought some Esanta to try this year to grow in a big hanging basket I intend to keep them in it for at least 4 years, my only tips are they like lots of sunshine and dont overfeed else you just end up with loads of green leaves.

Thanks for that tip lottie I will give that type a try as well....
I grew mine in a hanging basket last year and had a few berries but sadly not many. I`ve planted side shoots and now hope to have a better second year so will let you know how it goes.
thanks sue!
I got some 'Alice' strawbs 'free' in the Daily Mail. As informed, I never let them flower and fruit (well one fruit) in the first year so they would build up a strong plant. It tasted luverly ! Looking forward to this year. Cheers, Tony.
