I opened a tin of plum tomatoes last night and I have saved a few seeds! Will these grow having been through the canning process? Just felt like experimenting.
The canning process will have killed the seeds. Odds are also that the tomatoes are a hybrid variety, hence they won't grow true to type.
Thanks for that, glad I asked first before sowing!
Try the varieties Roma or San Marzano. Both are very similar to the canned varieties.
This may be an urban myth, but I once read that POWs used to grow tomatoes from the seeds collected from tins they were sent in food parcels. Tins will only be pasturised, so it is possible that the temperature might not get high enough to kill all of the seeds. Give it a go! I think I will try it this year, just for the hell of it!
I've grown Roma (which another poster mentioned) - they're a very nice tasting plum type with few seeds, so great for making sauces.
Cheers -- Bob
After reading about some of Darwin's experiments with seeds this has to be worth a try. I think I'll go for a few propriety supermarket types for a bit of fun and will report back later in the year.
when you take the seeds from the tomatoes make sure you wash them thoroughly removing all the pulp from the seed. Then keep them in moist kitchen paper until ready to use
