    Hi all,

I was thinking about entering in our local village show this year and one of the categories is for one cucumber with stalk. I grew cucumbers last year in my greenhouse but grew the female only varieties. I was wondering which varieties would be best for showing, would size be an issue, as I think female only varieties tend to be smaller. My cucumbers last year were a lovely shape but not as long as the ones in the shops. Also do you think they would taste the cucumber? I would be grateful for any tips. Does any body know of any good forums for growing veg for show? sorry so many questions in one!

    Thanks, Becky

    Hi Becky

Last year about the day before our local show I went round our garden and picked something for every class that I had growing already (that's not explained very well!? I went round the garden with the show program and if I had something that would fit into one of the classes I picked it for the show...that's better smiley - biggrin )

I entered loads, some were great, some looked rubbish, my potatoes were the prettiest and smallest in show, my rhubarb I hid because it was about an inch thinner than everyone elses! I still have no idea what it's judged on although I think uniformity and aesthetics are key. They certainly didn't taste any? For cucs I would imagine bigger and straighter the better?

I entered about 20 classes including cake making, flowers, fruit, veg and jam and didn't take it at all seriously but came away with two firsts, 3 seconds and 3 thirds and about £7 in prize money (that was spent on plants at the show!. I was delighted. It's always worth trying and I would say for me, a broad net caught some fish!

If you can get hold of it the RHS guide to showing veg is worth reading.
As the class is only for a single cucumber (usually it is a matching pair) it probably needs to be long and straight, with an even thickness down the length, an even green colour and with no spots or blemishes. Size isn't always important but it often helps where there is only one in the class.
I have never had a cucumber tasted or even cut in a show.
