Last year was my first year. When do we need to start sowing stuff? I don't want to sow to early in a greenhouse for it to be to be to early to put outside. As i know the frost kills it. This year i will grow beet, swede, cali, runner beans, tom, corn, brokli, carrots. Its mainly veg not salad. Please excuse my spelling and English i am very tired.
When the weeds start growing 'tis time to start sowing. That's sound advice for sowing most veg seeds outdoors. Things like tomatoes and runner beans are best started indoors or in a greenhouse. Toms for outdoor planting can be sown indoors late March or early April and should be ready for planting out in mid or late May depending on where you are. Runner beans and sweetcorn can be left until April, again for planting out about 5 or 6 weeks later.
This chart might help!
click on the name of the veg for more info!
You might like to think about making a tailored sowiong/planting out chart to refer to throughout the spring. When I have decided what to grow each year I put all the names of the veg down the side of a spreadsheet and put dates in two-week blocks along the top.
Then, referring to the seed packets I colour in the cells according to when to sow, plant out etc. I then print it off and stick it on the kitchen wall. Hey Presto: an at-a-glance chart of what to do when.
Saving it from one year to the next means you can just update according to what you have decided to drop/add. It works really well for me.
