ahm looking to have a raised bed built to grow Leeks,Onions etc. this will be a permanent structure, should I use Brieze blocks or bricks.Any ideas welcome.
How high do you want it i have 2 raised beds both made from wood the lowest on is 8inch planks the other is made of half round poles and is 3ft high. The 8inch one is held in place with stakes. The other is a "log cabin" i cut in half and used fence post to keep in place.
Sue,
Sue. Where did you source the soil to fill a 3 foot high bed ?
Depending on your bricklaying skills, I.d use breeze blocks lined with plastic or something. They are so absorbent they would draw all the moisture out of your soil in an instant. Plus it would be easy enough to add another level if you feel the need.
My raised beds (as I have said before) are paving slabs on edge with a welded band of angle iron around the top. They are only an inch and a bit thick so you don't lose garden area unlike railway sleepers. Cheers, Tony.
Hi Ivyhouse,
We have a building site near by and asked if they would sell me a lorry load of soil then thought the lorry would be to big to get to my house so they bought me round 3 dumper buckets round and it was loads it covered the whole of our drive and next doors and was 5ft high or more took a lot of work to move but grew some nice veg last year not a big garden but we grew carrots parsnips beetroot onions shallots red cabbage sprouts and main crop pots also grew wallflower plants after some of the other had finished. So i you have a site near you just go and ask i paid £40.00 and had enough to top up all gardens also neighbours had there fill.
