Hi can anyone suggest a good plant for the shade ? It will only get sun after 2pm.
Thanks
Hostas, loads of different kinds of foliage, you can make a beautiful mix.
But slugs like them too so iron phosphate slug pellets may be needed.
Lovely foliage and gorgeous white flowers late summer is the japanese anemone "Honorine Jobert"
Oh lots of other things, but these two are my first choice for shade - as long as it's not too dry.
I'm a big fan of ferns for shady places. They offer a range of shapes and textures.
For hardy evergreen feathery foliage there are several species of Polystichum, known as 'shield ferns'. Polystichum setiferum is my favourite. The hart's tongue fern, Asplenium scolopendrium, has lovely foliage and is virtually indestructible. The shuttlecock fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris, is a larger, more architectural plant, the immature shoots of which can apparently be eaten raw or cooked, though I've never tried.
All these ferns are easily propagated by division so a display can be built up in a few years.
For a low-growing evergreen with the most beautiful flowers in shades of off-white, cream, pale green and pink to dark burgundy at this time of year, it's hard to beat Helleborus orientalis (not Niger). They are tough, very promiscuous and will repay you with zillions of baby plants too. For height you could go for the wonderful Hydrangea Quercifolia (oak leaf hydrangea). Gets to be quite big with big, oak-shaped leaves and the most beautiful, delicate creamy white panicles. The added bonus with this plant is that it will tolerate dry shade quite well.
