I'm currently growing borage from seed, and am thinking about where to plant it out. I've just read on the internet that if planted next to tomato plants it improves the flavour of the tomatoes. However, as it readily self-seeds, I'm wondering whether my small veg patch will end up covered with borage if I plant it there! Any thoughts anyone?

I don't know about what effect it has on tomatoes, but yes it does self-seed readily. The seedlings are easily to identify however and quite easy to pull up when small. That's what I do, always leaving a couple to grow and flower,
mainly because the colour is beautiful and bees, especially bumble bees love them, which is a good thing for a vegetable garden.

    Hi Lorea,
Borage is one of the plants that people are starting to use again in cooking and drinks, it's a very worth while to look at but also to use in ice cubes etc,

I have a bunch that just arrived one summers day about 3 years ago at the base og a peach tree and has been there ever since, Ive done nothing special to keep it going but it seems happy to be there.

Thanks for those replies. Yes, punpun, it does sound a very useful plant, both medicinally and flavour-wise, as well as being pretty. Knowing that it's easy to spot and pull up, Margaret, has allayed my fears about planting it in the veg patch. I'll keep you posted about the tomato flavour issue. I have three seedlings growing strong at the moment, so one will go in the veg patch, one in the cottage style bed, and the other..... haven't decided yet.
