Now this may seem a strange one, but I was wondering if anyone knew if you can purchase earth worms anywhere?

The reason I'm asking is that I built several raised beds to grow veg in 2 years ago now and to fill them I used compost topped off with a couple of bags of top soil. Now the beds have been great upto yet but I would like to get some worms in there to start doing thier magic and making the filling even better.

Our local bait and fishing licence shop sells more earthworms to gardeners than it does to anglers!

You can buy them online if you google earthworms for sale.

"Build the raised bed, they will come".
Where have I heard that? Remember, there will not be many worms if there is little for them to feed on first. Cheers, Tony.

If you have a compost bin, or know someone who has one, the chances are that, at this time of year, they will be massed around the lid of the bin, and ready for 'transplanting'!

You'll only need a few to start with, I had next to none about 18 months ago when I first dug in two beds. So long as you feed them with compost they'll multiply like no tomorrow.

You'll find them in the compost, under pots and practically any where it's damp and warm. Next time you're out walking along a country path take a bucket and up turn some stones, you're sure to find some.

Initally thanks to everyone whom has commented on my 1st message,

i will definately be going to the takleshop this weekend,

i feel though i didnt clartify the make up of the raised beds,

i think the reason there are no worms in there or have migrated there from eleswhere in the graden is that the raised beds are made from old factory pallets stacked 2 or 3 high are on top of a hard standing of gravel that makes up the bottom of my garden, the gravel was cleared then the bottom pallet placed on the membrane underneath as the bottom of our garden is just old rubble with no soil to speak of at all on top,

so it has been a case of the only fillng the beds have had is what i have provded with compoast an top soild to finsh off.

i have dressed the beds with manure this year and even a little of my own compost that i have made over the last 2 years in an old water butt at the bottom of the garden but there are still no worms smiley - sadface

But once again thanks to everyone whom took the time to reply
