A bit late but .....if i plant desiree main crop pots for harvesting as late as possible for winter storage do i need to chit them or plant them with my chitted earlies as they are?
Thank you
Chit all potatoes for best effect; brings them on best.
By the way; what is a good crop in weight per (cubic!) metre for potatoes?
Has anybody every done some measuring of the bulk of their crop?!
No fishermen's stories now!
I'd say not to bother chitting mains because it doesn't seem to make any difference to yields, unlike earlies which produce more yield when chitted.
thank you chaps but more answers please!
I`m going to plant my Desiree in April as usual. They usually come in around the middle of September. I have no problem with storage. I use paper sacks and store them in the shed. They last all winter usually !
If you want them to come in later then I would suggest a May planting but I`m not really sure why you want to do this. They should store ok anyway......

As one of the other guys said, I cant see the point of chitting them. It`s not like you want them as quick as poss (like earlies) plus they are going to be in the ground for months.
Seems like wasted effort to me !

If you've got the seed pots you might as well put them in trays in a light position to stop the sprouts becoming long and straggly, and they'll be ready to plant in April.
Potatoes have a fairly set growing life so they (maincrop like desiree) will tend to mature about 4 months after planting them.
Desiree store well, so even if you harvest them in August they will keep, in a cool but frost free place) well into the following year.
Good luck L
I agree with L. Chitting can do no harm and if you've got the room, being in the light stops them getting long shoots which easily break off when planting.
