Hi, I'm growing some Alderman peas for the first time this year. Is it best to sow them straight into the ground when the weather's warmer, or germinate them inside now and plant them out when they're bigger and more sturdy?
Obviously I'm hoping to hear that I should sow them inside now, because I'm impatient! Unfortunately most of what I've read on the net seems to suggest that they should just go straight out into the ground. I grew a different variety of pea last year, a few plants each way, and none of them did very well, so I want to really try and do them the correct way this year and give them the best chance possible.
Thanks for any advice!

Obtain a 1 yard length of guttering and plant the peas in there. Keep in greenhouse until shoots are showing and weather is kinder. Dig a trench the same profile as the guttering and when ready, slide the peas into the trench.
I should look for pea sticks about 8 - 9 feet high after pressing into the ground. But be ready to introduce taller sticks should it become apparent. Cheers, Tony.
Yes, Aldermans are whoppers, and take quite a while, too. I've got mine in the ground now. I wouldn't wait too much longer. Peas are very hardy things.

Thanks Tony, looks like good advice. I haven't got a greenhouse though, so will be using my one sunny windowsill. The guttering unfortunately is a bit too large scale for my circumstances...
With the "pea sticks" - will I need these as well as the trellis? Sorry - that's probably a stupid question... but I assumed they'd climb up the trellis?
Thanks again!

They may climb up the trellis if the wooden slats aren't too wide. Peas prefer thin objects to wrap their tendrils round (pea netting). Cheers and keep the questions coming! Tony.

Ah I see - thanks Tony! I'll put out something thinner for them then!
Thanks too, Italophile - I won't wait any longer! In the ground they go, and I'll try and do some on the windowsill too as back up!
