I grown cress on the kitchen windowsill - East facing, plenty of light. Why doesn't it grow lush and succulent as the box of cress I can buy from the the supermarket? Is there any way can I improve my own produce which is less tender and rather tasteless? Would it be better from entirely in a mini-cloche on the windowsill? Many thanks, Maggie
I grow cress and seems to be ok to me. I get a plastic tray, add two sheets of kitchen towel, add plenty of seeds and drown them in water. I put on a sunny windowsill for two weeks and then harvest.
Best thing is not let them dry out at all. I always use plenty of water. I have found if you leave them too long the green leaves start to change colour.
As its growing from seed its only using the energy contained within the seed.
I havent had supermarket cress for years, but I believe they have some type of compost. Perhaps the nutrients from the compost is adding to the cress.
My cress grown in the above way seems to be full of flavour. Maybe its the batch of seeds you have.

Thanks Mike. I grow mine in multi purpose compost so I will have a go using kitchen roll paper. I do make sure it is kept wet. And I will also buy a better quality seed instead of supermarket own brand! Maggie
