The other day i opened a pack of onion sets i had bought recently and saw that they had black marks on them and i thought that this didn't look right, so i didn't plant them.
Am i right in thinking this, please help?

Onion sets will get black smudgey marks on them if they haven`t been stored correctly, or if they are old stock.
If you have doubts, I wouldn`t plant them, as you don`t want to introduce any diseases into your soil.
I`d pick through them, and discard the black ones.
If you think they were faulty when you bought them, and if you still have the receipt, take them back to the shop for a refund.
Last year I inadvertently brought Onion White Rot into my plot with sets, 5 of my 20 beds are affected, all my garlic crop was obliterated, all my tools/boots have to be disinfected between beds and the best bit...it lasts about 20 years and none of the onion family can be grown there in that time!!!!
I have lots of seed this year and not a set in sight! It's not worth the gamble. If you have any doubt, don't!
