I intend to plant my broad, french and runner beans in toilet roll holders as I read that you just plant the lot and do not disturb the plants. The holders then disintegrate. This may seem obvious but should I put crumpled newspaper in the bottom to stop the soil dropping out or is it better to use sticky tape outside and across the hole to ac hieve the same.
Hi!
I did this with my peas and beans and didn't bother to seal the end, just stood them in a tray, i did put some compost in the bottom of the tray they were stood in which helped them stand and also helped to keep the roll damp.
Seemed to work quite well! Hope it does for you too.
I don't know if it's what you're supposed to do, but I make four cuts about an inch long, opposite each other in the bottom of the tube, then fold them in so that they form a base, slotting the last one under the first one so that it doesn't come undone. Just the same as if you were closing a cardboard box with four flaps. I hope that makes sense!
Using the insides of kitchen rolls cut in half means the "pots" are a bit deeper.
Many thanks for the replies I will do that tomorrow and start them off in the airing cupboard
Due to the health concerns over mineral oil in recycled cardboard, I am playing safe and have just stopped using cardboard for vegatable propagation. The mineral oil originates in the ink from newsprint and its use is being phased out for some food packaging.
I put the toilet roll tube inside a spray can top, fill with compost/soil than bash it down onto a hard surface, remove can top, top up with soil and plant seed. This bashing down seems to be enough to consolidate the soil.
Newspaper in the bottom of a plastic blue mushroom box then prunge into water. Easy peasy. Cheers, Tony.
Of course the word should have been "plunge". No idea where the 'r' came from, it's at the other end of the keyboard ! ! Cheers, Tony.

I have used tiolet rolls before for various different plants and I found they restrict the root growth and effect the plant growth,Last year I was watching Beechgrove garden program and noticed that they came to same conclusion as well.
If you do go that way then open the sides before planting out.
Thats just my two pence worth.
That does sound logical so must remermber to split the holders before putting them into the ground.
This is the method I use to plant peas and beans using toilet rolls:
It stops them from drying out and also stops the soil falling out. You are left with four separate little plants each with their own roots.

I have used this method for a number of years. I use an ice cream tub, which takes about a dozen tubes. No need to put paper in the bottom as the roots will keep the compost in place.
