Looking for info on asparagus planting, I found this info in the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú gardening guides.

    How to plant
•You will need about an hour to plant 10 crowns. Make a straight trench, 30cm wide by 20cm deep, and then pour soil down the length of the trench to make a 10cm high mound.
•Next, carefully take your asparagus crowns and sit them on top of the mound, spreading the roots out either sides - plant crowns 30cm apart and then cover with about 5cm of soil, which has been sifted through a riddle or sieve.

And this on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú plant finder.

Asparagus does not need traditional wide raised beds, nor is it the luxury crop often assumed.

I'm confused as to which way to plant it.

It is a bit misleading that, but what certainly is the case, the secret in Asparagus growing is 'soil preparation' as the plants could be in their chosen spot for twenty years or more.

Dig the trench as they say, but I would go deeper so that I could incorporate a liberal helping of farm yard manure.

Then you want to form a ridge on top of this with soil ( similar in style to earthing up potatoes)

Asparagus crowns have spindly roots so you drape the roots over either side of the ridge then backfill the trench.

    And thats it basically!

I would agree completely with what Tee Gee says - a deeper trench and plenty of manure. You will also need to add a thick mulch (15 cms) of manure or compost every year, and keep the site well weeded, as asparagus doesn't like competition. The books say that you shouldn't pick spears until at least the second year, but I found with mine that there just weren't enough spears anyway until year 4.

Thanks, will do the trench method.

I have just had some raised beds made for my veg patch. They are filled with a mix of norfolk top soil and well rotted manure, so it should'nt be to much hard work.
