I sow 24 pepper plants on my window ledge. Its always very warm in the kitchen. I sown them 12 days ago and still have nothing happening! Shall i bin them and start again?
Not necessarily. Peppers can take a while to germinate, usually longer than tomato seeds, for example. They need plenty of warmth - around 25C - with the warmth from underneath if possible. Putting them inside a plastic bag left just slightly open for air circulation helps too.
hi Katie
I am only into my second year of growing my own so I am by no stretch of the imagination an expert! However, I kept a diary last year of when I planted and what happened. My notes said that the peppers were then last to germinate. In fact they took about 3-4 weeks! I was just about to bin them when I saw signs of life.
This year I planted pepper seeds on the 4th March and only last night has one popped his wee head up! So be patient. If they do fail you still have time to resow in a couple of weeks.
Good luck
Marco
Hello katie,
Marco is right, I sowed mine in mid Feb and they took 5 weeks to germinate in an unheated greenhouse. I was about to give up, especially as the seed were remnants of last years. They all germinated in the end and I pricked them out today.
Conclusion: The temperature in my unheated GH drops too low at night and this slows everything down. Next year I'm going to invest in a propagator.
I'm sure your's will be fine but I agree they do test your patience!
Have a good weekend L
