Last year both beans and corn did not germinate well for me. I soaked the overnight and then put them on damp kitchen paper. Problem was more rotted away than germinated. What an I doing wrong.
Try sowing them in potting mix for transplanting. They need moisture - but not wet - and plenty of warmth.
I have never soaked either of these seeds before sowing. I always sow them in pots and keep them in the greenhouse until they are large enough to put outside.
I germinated sweetcorn last year in damp kitchen paper in a heated propagator. I didnt soak them 1st but they were sprouted in 36 hours !

I never soak them, just lay them on damp kitchen paper in a plastic container at room temperature. I had 100% germination last year. As soon as a tiny root point appears (usually within about 4/5 days) lay the seed gently in a pot of compost and cover with more compost.
But that was after I had done the same with sweet corn from a well known company and had very, very poor germination. Some companies sell very poor seed.
Sorry Julie, I didn't make it clear I was writing about sweetcorn. I sow beans straight into RootTrainers, usually two per section and remove one if two germinate, which they usually do.
I have given up ordering from companies with ultra-bright catalogues. They offer poor value for money.
Sow indoors in heat, at 20 C, on top of the compost to prevent the seed rotting, in individual cells in late April. Remember that there is no point in sowing the seed too early, or the plants will become too big before you can plant them out into their final growing positions, when danger of frost has passed. Move the plants to a cooler frost free location such as a cold frame to harden off before planting out in their final positions
