A hardy vegetable from a wild maritime plant 'Cranbe maritima', it is the blanched young shoots that are edible.

I sowed the seeds years ago, out of which two germinated and they persisted even under difficult conditions, including being eaten by cabbage white butterfly caterpillars. Last year they looked healthy as they were sharing space under mesh with some red cabbage. So this spring I was determined to get some old terracotta pots over them for my first crop.

Nearly ready to pick, I have tried some raw which have a pleasant celery taste. I suspect the soil is not quite rich enough for them, but can remedy that for next year with a bag of manure.

So worth a go if you are looking at seed catalogues for something new.

It looks great. I really should grow it again. Trouble was in the past I forgot to mark it`s site and rolled the rotovator over it.

PhD and brain like a sieve lol
