Hi there, can anyone tell me the secret of lush-looking hanging baskets? Mine always look like the poor relation in need of a makeover! I feed them, water them and use good compost with moisture gel and vermiculite. How many olants should I put in each one? And why do my petunias always seem to go mouldy looking? (:
What type and size are your baskets and would you like them planted for sun or shade?

I will try again!

I think you need to lose the IMG bit at the beginning and end of your link for it to work. Don't ask me why though..just saw that problem on here before.
Thanks - I will try again!

yay, at last. What a lovely hanging basket.
Now, all we need is your expertise on how you got it to look so fab.
Well worth the perserverence!Beautiful basket!
You can pack as many plants in as you like but as was said before you need to choose your plants to suit your site before you can get the right success through feeding and deadheading.
Two years ago I put trailing begonias in troughs at the front of my house (east facing, sheltered and warm against the house wall) they were fantastic and people walking past commented on them.Last year I put them in hanging baskets at the back of my house (west facing, in baskets in partal shade under the overhang of a canopy) they did ok but were not great. So this year they are the front again and busy lizzies, lobelia and fuchsias in baskets at the back - horses for courses.
Lovely basket !
I find the surfinia petunias don't go as mouldy as the bog standard ones.
And I never use lobelia now..find it dies off before the rest of the plants and looks unsightly.
Just pack them in, a 12'' basket can take at least 10 plants.
Water twice a day(whether it rains or not) feed once a week and deadhead EVERY single day.
Welcome to my world horththit looks like we share the same misfortune. My neighbours grow lush hanging baskets for fun, they are so full it's surprising they don't pull the sides of their houses over Sadly I've never had the same results.
I gave up in the end and plant in pots on the ground. They retain water better. If you want to keep trying, I read somewhere if you put a trough in the bottom of your baskets with gravel in before you fill with compost this creates a well for water so it doesn't just pour through when watering thus keeping the compost moist even on hot days only problem with that is your plants may end up with their roots constantly in water.
I'm sure you'll get lots more advise.

The last one's not as good but I swear by Petunia's in baskets, cut the flowers off for a second/third flowering, well worth it.
Rain
Hello horththit,
I agree with the others. Know where your basket will hang and what plants would do well there. I do mix a little slow release fertilizer in the potting mix and I also fertilize about once every two weeks with a water soluble.
Beautiful baskets lily and Rain!
Sorry I've been so long replying - computer problems!. Lily and Rain have lovely baskets, I'll try my best this year. However, I think my problem was not putting enough plants in. Can be expensive can't it? Must get some plugs and bring them on. Thank you one and all.
