I am in the fog of sowing my tomato seedlings.

When they are big enough to handle without risk of damage and warmer than it is now. In SE England that would be probably mid-April.

    Hi, Jane,

Depends where you live and last frost for your area as to when to plant out your toms or planting out in a plastic GH.

If planting in grow bags the recommended number of plants is two per bag for toms and toms grow/fruit better with a deep root system so don't grow them with your bag flat on the ground, which I did the first time, instead lay it length wise divide the compost and cut your bag up the middle, stand both ends up and you'll have two bags with deep compost to put your toms insmiley - smiley

Don't forget to put holes in the bottom of the bags to let water drain.

Sorry doesn't answer your Q but if you can say which part of the country you are in then someone will no doubt be able to help further as to when to plant out.

I live in N/Wales I put my outdoor Roma seedlings into old stone urinal troughs that sit on brick against a south facing wall in mid April, I put marmande and gardeners delight into the greenhouse at the end of April, I put marmande and Roma's into a raised bed in the middle of the garden around the middle of may, any spares that are left I put in the patch in the paddock in June as we love green toms deep fried in cornmeal.
I should add I stagger planting my tom seeds.

what a great idea with the growbags, i thought i would
only be able to get four growbags on one side of my
greenhouse(first year) until i read your message this
morning, instead of four bags i doubled it to eight bag's
hence instead of eight plant's per side i can now plant
sixteen, so many thank's zoomer for the great tip. kevin.

I would never sow tomato seeds directly into a grow bag-raise them in small pots/trays first.

When are they large enough to pot on? as soon as they have a few `true leaves`. Just be gentle and handle them by the leaves not the stem.

Finally plant out or into their final container when appropriate-depending on location ,indoors or for outside growing.

Tomatoes about ready for final planting(not this year)

The original message wasn't asking about sowing, the Q was about planting out... but 4smimilingcat6 is right it's better not to sow them directly into the grow bag but I think you already knew that.

Thanks for your message.. I thought it would be best to try and get the plants half grown then I'll put them in the grow bag and hopefully they will grow! but I think I wont do this until end of April/May time... I live in the South/West so the weather is not too bad but I dont want the frost to get to them.... Thanks again.
