    Hi,

I grew courgettes last year, not successfully I might add after seeing pics of someone's plant growing like a triffid on a cane support mine was planted in the ground without support and somewhat disappointing. I got about 4 perfectly formed courgettes from a plant in the veg bed and although pleased would have liked a glut smiley - smiley

I'm trying again this year but going to plant in pots. The variety is 'all green bush', could I try it this year as a cordon and train upwards or will I need to get a different variety..

My Q is can a bush variety be trained upwards...if not can I still grow this in a tall pot and have it trailing down. Seems a waste not to germinate the seeds I already have.

I don't know about growing it upwards, but I tried the same 'green bush' for the last 3 years. Two years I did them in grow bags and they came to nothing then last year I planted them out into proper soil and I did indeed have a glut. I think it was because they got too dry and lost nutrients in bags where as I dug in lots of grow bags/manure in the soil and kept them well fed, so I would suggest that might have been the problem last year? If they are called a 'bush' maybe that means they are not meant to be grown up supports - certainly mine wouldn't have coped with that as a flat floor covering type. You might need a different type.

Courgettes like lots of nutrient and lots of water. I have never grown them in a pot but would think they would run out of food and water pretty quickly. Dig in plenty of manure before you plant. A bush variety is not suited to growing up or down. I suggest you try again in the open ground.

If you decide to change try a yellow variety. It adds colour to salads and other dishes.

All green bush do crop well if you give them loads of water and feed, but they are a bush type so they don't trail.

Do you have one of the black plastic compost bin's, as I planted my pumkins/marrow/courgettes in the top of mine for the last three years and it worked realy well.

I packed the bin's as full as I could them with whatever I had got....then planted in the top's....feed once a week but water everyday.

The bin's sink a little but they croped realy well.

Hope that help's you out a little...happy gardening.

    Whatsthemarrow...

I've found the best way to grow courgettes is to construct a ramp out of bamboo canes behind the plants and train the plants up the ramp. The ramp should face the direction of most sunlight. Water well and feed with a tomato feed weekly. If you can't keep up with eating the fruits, then pick and fry the flowers in garlic butter or wait until the courgettes become huge great marrow-like monsters for stuffing with savoury mince!

Thanks for all the different advise, the jury's still out.

It's either try again the the ground, I'll have a third veg bed this year so do have alittle extra room but I've such alot of different veg I want to grow and courgettes take up abit of room....or try the ramp in a pot....or get a climbing variety. If the latter I'll look for a yellow variety.

Ooh, I might give the ramp a go this year, Honest Greengrass. My courgettes are usually in a growbag in the greenhouse or just planted in the ground.
