I bought a rhubarb in the autumn of 2009 plant r from Homebase but read that you shouldn't harvest in the first year so I let it be when it came up last spring. This year I have about 4 stalks but now there is a central growth which looks different from the leaves when they popped up and suspiciously like a flower is looming. What should I do? Let it flower or cut it off? Can I harvest the stalks left or should I leave it another year? If I cut the flower off will more stalks appear? Thanks for your help
Remove any flower stalks as low down as you can.If the plant flowers all the energy of the plant goes into making flowers and seeds and not stalks.I got lots of flower stalks on my plant last year - so keep an eye out for them. You should have a good harvest of stalks if you do this.
